How can you help your child to read?
As a parent, you are your child’s first and most important teacher. While teaching your child to read, you are exposing him/her to a world of books and learning.
The most excellent way to let your children be interested in reading is to read aloud to them! They will soon grow to love stories and books. Eventually they will want to read on their own.
With the help of you as parents, children learn how to read and practise reading until they can read for their own enjoyment. They will have an abundance of information and knowledge at their fingertips!
Reading can be a family activity too! Spending time with your child with word games, stories, and books will help your child to:
1)build a rich vocabulary by being exposed to new words
2) collect information and learn about the world
3) learn how stories and books have beginnings, endings, characters, and themes
which will help them in essay writing and comprehension later on.
4) learn how to listen and think
5) recognize the sounds of language and language patterns
6) grow to love books
Do not compare your child’s reading abilities to that of other children of the same age, as different children develop reading skills at different pace. The key is to be aware of your child’s reading level so that you know how to choose suitable books and activities that will help him/her to progress. Use the tips above and work with your child’s teacher and others to improve your child’s reading skills.
