Teaching Your Child Sign Language- Six Great Signs for You and Your Baby

Teaching a baby to sign is great for both parent and child. We have written several articles covering the benefits of baby sign language, the application of baby sign language for children with certain special needs, tips for success in signing with your child, and other general information on the subject. In this article, we simply want to teach you some of our favorite signs so you can get started signing with your baby!

Mother

Obviously, every child needs to know how to ask for her mother. We start with the ever popular “Mommy” (or “mama” where I come from). Seeing baby make this sign will make mommy so proud. Spread you fingers in an “open-5.” While holding your five fingers out, place your thumb on your chin.

Daddy

Of course, after baby learns mommy, she must learn “Daddy.” Dad will be even happier than Mom when he sees baby ask for him. Make an “open-5.” Next, with fingers extended, place your thumb against your forehead.

Milk

Now that baby has mom and dad’s attention, she can ask for more “milk.” You may have seen this fun one on the popular movie, Meet the Fockers. Simply open and close the fist of one or both hands, pretending that you are milking a cow. Holy cow, it’s that easy! This will be a popular sign for your baby. It relates to one of her favorite pastimes, drinking milk.

Eat

Now that baby can tell you she needs a drink, let’s prepare her to tell you she is hungry and ready to “eat.” Like milk, this will be one of baby’s favorites. Simply bring your fingers to your mouth in a repetitive motion, as if you are holding a piece of food (with the “flat–O”) and are going to eat it.

More

Once baby can ask for food and drink, she will be sure to want to ask for “more.” This is certainly one of our daughter’s favorites. To sign more, just bring both “flat-O” hands together, touching finger tips together in a repeating action in front of your body.

All Done

Now that baby has had enough to eat, teach her to tell you she is “all done.” The sign is much more pleasant than baby kicking and screaming to get out of her high chair. You can use this sign to confirm that baby is finished with any number of activities. Baby can tell you she is “all done,” meaning “I’m all done….don’t make me keep doing this activity.” To sign all done, hold both palms up, facing inward, then flip both palms outward.

Well, there you have it…Six great signs for a great start teaching your baby to sign. Good luck and happy signing!

Buying Clothes for Your Baby

Besides of course the day of your wedding, having a baby can be one of the most memorable days of your life and one that will not require the hassles of trying to find good Salt Lake City wedding photography and Salt Lake City wedding photographers, but it will certainly be difficult. One of the first things people like friends and family and even some mere acquaintances will ask you after they congratulate you on having a child is whether or not it is a boy or a girl, and this will probably make you wonder, that is, if you want to know what gender the baby will be before it is born, as many couples decide to wait and just let it be a surprise, but otherwise thoughts will probably race through your head about what colors you will want the baby’s clothes and their room to be. You can go with the traditional colors of pink and blue if you want to, but you may also want to consider painting the room another color so that you don’t get into the habit of enforcing gender stereotypes on your children too early and hinder their development into free thinking individuals with as few negative influences on their concept of gender as is possible. When going out and buying baby things, you will probably want to remember that many of the things you may purchase for your baby will most likely not be needed after a while, and buying too many of these things early on may be a waste of money so that you cannot buy or pay for something that he or she really may need in the future, so you should most certainly consider hand me down items from your older brother or sister or cousins or whoever if they are available to you and you can also get cheap toys at thrift shops that your child will have just as much fun playing with as other things that may be new or may be more expensive.

This may be the same idea for a lot of the baby clothes you will buy, because they will not fit well after a while, so it is probably a good idea to get them larger than the child is at the time that you purchase them at, so that they can have a chance to grow into them and get the most use out of them as possible, especially since some baby clothing items that may be enticingly cute will be expensive and will be a poor deal for the amount of time and use that your child gets out of them while they use them. That is not to say that there is anything at all wrong with splurging on your kid every once in a while, but having kids is pretty expensive already so don’t endanger their future.
